Shingles rash affecting the face of a 59 year old male patient. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a result of infection by the same virus that causes chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus. This virus can remain dormant in the nerve tracts that emerge from the spine. When this virus reactivates and causes shingles in the V1 distribution (along the ophthalmic sensory nerve), it usually appears as a painful rash affecting the forehead, scalp, and upper eyelid on one side of the face. Treatment for herpes zoster in the V1 distribution typically involves antiviral medication, painkillers, and anti-inflammatories.
