Atopic dermatitis, also called atopic eczema, is an inflammatory skin reaction that occurs without any obvious external cause. It can be complicated by infections, in this case a viral infection termed eczema herpeticum. Eczema can be treated with soothing ointments and corticosteroid drugs. The viral infection can be treated with antiviral drugs.
