Prosthetic eye. Also known as a glass eye,it is worn for psychological and cosmetic reasons to replace an eye that has been removed. A prosthetic eye consists of a thin, curved, hollow, plastic shell which fits behind the eyelid into the cavity left by the removal of the natural eye. The artificial iris (coloured part of the eye) is produced by painting the back of the transparent cornea,or by using a photograph. There is no sight, but limited movement of the false eye is produced by attaching some of the eye muscles to the implant | |
