Egyptian necropolis. Satellite image of Saqqara,the ancient necropolis (city of the dead sands are at left,while part of the cultivated area along the River Nile is down far right (dark green). Several ancient earthworks can be seen,but the feature that is most prominent is the Step Pyramid (upper centre) of the Pharaoh Djoser,built in the 27th century BC,over 4600 years ago. Saqqara was used as a burial ground for over 3000 years,but it was covered by desert sands for most of the past 2000 years,and many of the burial sites have only been excavated in the 19th and 20th centuries.
