Bethlehem,Israel. Satellite image of the West Bank town of Bethlehem, situated 765 metres above sea level in the Judean Hills,10 kilometres south of Jerusalem. Bethlehem is thought to be the early home of David,King of Judah and Israel (1000-961 BC). It also contains the Church of the Nativity, which is believed by Christians to be built on the site where Jesus was born. On 21 December 1995,Israeli troops withdrew from Bethlehem as part of the process of establishing Palestinian self-rule in the West Bank. However, the town saw Israeli- Palestinian fighting in a renewed conflict that began in 2000. Image taken on 10 April 2000 by Space Imaging's Ikonos satellite | |
