Khartoum,Sudan, satellite image. Khartoum is Sudan's capital and second largest city. It is at the convergence of the Blue Nile (right) and White Nile (bottom). The Nile then flows north towards Egypt. There are numerous slums around the outskirts of the city populated by refugees that fled conflicts in Chad,Ethiopia and Uganda in the 1970s and 1980s. At centre right is Khartoum International airport. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 12 January 2004 | |
