Central Singapore, satellite image. This is the Marina Bay area of Singapore. The Singapore River flows from right, emptying into the bay that leads to the sea (far left). This is the historical and financial centre of Singapore, with skyscrapers in the business district (upper side of river,on the bay). Boats are seen in the bay itself, and roads and bridges connect to the rest of the city and island. Singapore was founded in 1819 by Stamford Raffles, and it grew to become one of the largest trading centres in South-East Asia. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 9 August 2000 | |
