Organic farming. Young organic courgette (Cucurbita pepo) plants. Organic crops are grown without using conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste or sewage sludge. These plants are growing through black sheeting, which is used to suppress weeds and warm the soil. They have had their protective fleece (bottom) pulled back to allow them access to the sun and to pollinate. The rows behind the courgette plants contain French beans Phaseolus vulgaris),leaf beet (Beta vulgaris, under fleece) and hedge seedlings in protective tubes (top).
