Maiden Castle. Aerial photograph of Maiden Castle, the largest hill fort in Britain. The dimensions of the fort are truly impressive, even after 2000 years of erosion the ramparts are still around 6m high in some places. The whole fort covers an area of 18.8 hectares. Evidence from archaelogical remains found at the site indicate that is was first occupied in the late Stone Age/Early Bronze Age (circa 3000BC) though the hill fort acquired its present dimensions in the Iron Age (circa 350BC). The Romans captured the fort in circa AD 43. Photographed near Dorchester,Dorset,UK | |
