Impact craters. Map of the Earth showing the location of impact craters on land greater than 10 kilometres in diameter. An impact crater is a depression in the Earth's surface typically created by the impact of a meteorite. Dots represent impact sites. Size of dots depict the size in diameter of the craters: small dots (10 to <25km),medium dots (25 to <50km),large dots (50km or greater). The greatest concentration of impact sites are on the continents of North America,Europe, and Australia. The largest verified crater is in Vredefort,South Africa. This 300 kilometre diameter crater is thought to have been caused by a meteor impact over 2 billion years ago | |
