Al Kidan desert in the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) in the United Arab Emirates,satellite image. The largest and driest sand desert in the world,the Empty Quarter encompasses the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It is extremely inhospitable,with temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius by day and freezing by night. Its dunes can be as much as 300 metres in height.
