Northern Italy,3D computer artwork, viewed at an altitude of 149 kilometres. The main foreground shows the Italian peninsula south of the plains of the Po River. The landscape is dominated by the Apennine Mountains which include the highest peaks of the Maiella,Gran Sasso and Monte Vettore. On the left in the foreground there is Mount Vesuvius near Naples. The horizon of this view is formed by the Alps. This image was created by Christoph Hormann using data obtained from satellites such as Landsat and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). The data was processed into computer models using three-dimensional rendering software and then coloured and distorted to mimic the natural curvature of the Earth | |
