Kilauea volcano, satellite image. This volcano is located on the island of Hawaii,USA. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupting 45 times in the 20th century. Lava flows added more than two square kilometres of land to the island in that time. It has been in continuous eruption since 1983,called the Pu'u O'o eruption. The central caldera (just left of centre) is called Halema'uma'u. New lava flows appear darker than old ones. The light grey tongue of lava at upper right dates from 1882- 1885. The dark arc to its right dates from 1974,and the very dark patch immediately to its left is from 1982. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite on 14th January 2003 | |
