Soufriere Hills volcano erupting,photographed from the orbiting International Space Station. North is towards bottom left. A large plume of steam and ash is seen heading southwest from the volcano,which is located on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean Sea. This eruption occurred on 20th March 2002. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995,which was the first recorded eruption of the volcano. Since that time it has been nearly continually active,ejecting material and causing earthquakes.
