Retreat of the Bering Glacier. Image 2 of 2. Landsat image of the Bering glacier,Alaska,USA in 2002. Higher temperatures and changes in precipitation have caused this glacier to retreat significantly. Scientists are worried that the lightening of the load on the Earth's tectonic plates which is caused by the loss of ice in this, and other, glaciers may lead to earthquakes. There is some evidence that,at the end of the last ice age, glacial melting led to large earthquakes in Scandinavia and Canada. Images E235/292 and E235/293 show the glacial retreat over a 16 year period | |
