Chilean glaciers, photographed from the orbiting International Space Station. This is the Cerro Pared Norte coastal mountains in southern Chile. The valleys between the snow-covered mountains form lakes. Meltwater from glaciers (running vertically at centre) deposit sediment-laden water (green) into the lakes, the waters of which eventually make their way to the sea. Photographed in December 2000 | |
