Hurricane Katrina damage to Biloxi,USA. Quickbird satellite image. Katrina caused the largest storm surge ever recorded in the USA: a wall of water nearly ten metres tall rushed onshore at Biloxi. In combination with winds of over 230 kilometres per hour, this destroyed bridges (upper left) and buildings. Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico coast of the USA on 29th August 2005. It was the third strongest hurricane to hit the USA in history, with a central pressure of 915 millibars when it made landfall. Its near-total destruction of the nearby city of New Orleans made it the costliest natural disaster in the USA to date. Photographed on 31st August 2005 | |
