Hurricane Ophelia. Aqua satellite image of hurricane Ophelia over the coast of North and South Carolina. At this stage Ophelia was a very slow-moving storm, fluctuating between strong tropical storm intensity and category one hurricane intensity. At its peak it had sustained winds of 135 kilometres per hour. Although the eye of the hurricane never made landfall Ophelia still caused considerable damage to North Carolina, especially its barrier islands. It bought down power lines, damaged buildings and stirred up huge waves that caused coastal flooding and beach erosion. Image taken on 13 September 2005 | |
