The coast of Louisiana is at upper centre. The maximum wind speed at this time was 250 kilometres per hour (kph). Katrina first made landfall near Miami,Florida on August 24 as a category 1 hurricane. It then moved south into the Gulf of Mexico where it intensified to a category 5 storm. It made landfall in Louisiana on 29 August,as a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 240 kph. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems that form over tropical seas.
