Jetstream clouds seen over north-western Libya. The jetstreams are high-altitude,fast-moving air currents that are a few thousand kilometres long. Cirrus clouds form at these high altitudes (these winds form between 7 and 14 kilometres high) and are swept along in the jetstream. The windspeeds can range from 60 to 125 kilometres per hour. The jetstreams form due to thermal effects, forming at the boundary between a warm and cold body of air. Photographed from Earth orbit on mission STS-113 (23 November to 7 December 2002),which was flown by the Space Shuttle Endeavour | |
