Great Barrier Reef,Australia. Terra satellite image of a section of the Australian coast, showing the Great Barrier Reef (light blue amongst the dark blue water). This reef is the largest accumulation of coral in the world. It stretches for 2000 km and is between 50 and 150 km from the coastline, forming a continuous barrier which creates a coastal lagoon. Coral reefs develop throughout the world in shallow, warm waters. They are formed by the accumulation of skeletons of organisms such as corals, snails and molluscs. Photographed in August 2004 | |
