Section of part of the nasal cavity with a framework of cartilage (blue) covered with a specialized epithelium (magenta) concerned with olfaction,i.e. the sense of smell. Many blood vessels deep to the surface help control the temperature of inspired air. Branches of the olfactory nerve are seen as solid unmyelinated nerve fibres (circular and pink stained) with embedded Schwann cells. The nasal mucosal surfaces are highly folded to increase the surface area over which air is moved. Magnification x70 when printed 10cm wide | |
