Section of the middle nasal septum with a core of cartilage (blue) covered with a specialized epithelium concerned with olfaction,i.e. the sense of smell. The surfaces show a tall stratified epithelium beneath which are many blood vessels (pink-red),branches of the olfactory nerves (cranial nerve I,solid pink cellular structures) and the ducts of Bowman's serous (watery) glands. These ducts and the nerves extend into the epithelium; the nerves end as sensory receptors for odorant molecules. Magnification x50 when printed 10cm wide | |
