Dead Sea salt pans. Astronaut photography salt pans at the southern end of the Dead Sea. The pans have been isolated from the main body of water and are left to evaporate, which leaves valuable salt as a remnant. In this image the land below the Dead Sea is Jordan, the land above it is Israel. The Dead Sea is so named as its high salt concentration makes it impossible for anything to live in it. This is due to the evaporation rate exceeding the inflow of water. The water level of the Dead Sea is over 200 metres below mean sea level.
