TRRM rainfall satellite. Illustration of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite in orbit over the eye of a hurricane. This joint NASA-JAXA mission launched in 1997. It provided 3D images of rain and storms for 17 years before it began to run out of fuel in July 2014. It will re-enter the atmosphere in summer 2015. The TRMM instruments are: Precipitation Radar (PR),TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI),Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS),Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy Sensor (CERES),and Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS). It has been replaced from May 2014 by the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite
