Swarm satellites in clean room
Swarm satellites in a clean room at the IABG centre in Germany. These three identical satellites make up the European Space Agency's Swarm mission. The satellites,named Alpha,Bravo and Charlie,are currently in orbit,recording magnetic signals from the earth's core,mantle,crust,oceans,ionosphere and magnetosphere. This information is necessary for modelling the Earth's geomagnetic field,and its interaction with solar winds and with other physical processes such as ocean circulation,climate and weather. The satellites were successfully launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome,Russia,on 22nd November 2013. Photographed 17th February 2012
