SPOT 4 (lower left) and Artemis (upper right) satellites,artwork. SPOT 4,launched by the European Space Agency in 1998,is part of the SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) family of satellites. The SPOT satellites,which are in polar orbits,are operated by a company created by the French space agency (CNES). Here,the area being mapped by SPOT 4 is shown by the beam passing from the North Sea over northern Europe. The red beam at left is indicating the use of a laser by SPOT 4 to communicate with the Artemis satellite. Artemis,a telecommunications satellite in a geostationary orbit,was launched in 2001
