Light micrograph (longitudinal section) of the cells in the root tip of a broad bean plant Vicia faba. The dark spot in the centre of each cell is the nucleus. Most of those seen are in interphase, when little activity may be observed. Some, however, are in the process of mitosis,a type of cell division. The chromosomes in the nuclei contract and separate prior to division. An example of anaphase can be seen just right of centre frame. Magnification x200 at 35mm size | |
