V-2 sounding rocket atmospheric flight. Footage from an onboard camera carried on a V-2 rocket that was launched from White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico, USA, on 17 February 1950. This rocket camera viewed the Earth from an altitude of up to 122 kilometres. The footage shows the initial launch, followed by rotating views of space and the Earth below as the rocket starts to spin on its trajectory into space and back down to Earth. The V-2 rockets, originally developed by Nazi Germany, were used by the USA after World War II, both to aid the development of new rockets, and as sounding rockets to study the Earth's atmosphere.
