2009 Samoan earthquake and tsunami. Animation of a global map centred on the western Pacific, showing the tsunami waves that resulted from the Samoan earthquake of 29 September 2009. This 8.1 moment magnitude earthquake struck near the Samoan Islands in the south-western Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued tsunami warnings for various regions over the following four hours. Destructive waves struck islands near the earthquake's epicentre. Waves over 12 metres high in Samoa killed 149 people there. In nearby American Samoa, 17-metre-high waves killed 34 people, and 22-metre-high waves in Tonga killed 9 people. Smaller waves travelled throughout the Pacific Ocean but caused no more deaths or damage. The animation covers 48 hours, with coloured dots showing where the waves hit land (red dots are the highest waves, key at lower left). At the end of the animation, the tsunami's 'energy map' is shown, indicating the uneven distribution of the kinetic energy produced by the earthquake and tsunami.
