Lens of the eye, close and long vision. Animation showing the changes to the lens of the eye during close and long vision. The eye is seen in sectioned view from the side, with the ciliary muscle and ciliary processes (brown) and the Zonule of Zinn (suspensory ligaments) between them and the lens (green). The iris and pupil of the eye are at right. In short vision (seeing nearby objects) the ciliary muscle contracts and pushes the ciliary processes and body towards the lens, reducing the tension of the suspensory ligaments. This induces a more spherical shape in the lends. The opposite happens when viewing distant objects (long vision). The ciliary muscles relax, and the the ciliary body moves away from the lens and increases the tension of the suspensory ligaments, flattening the lens.
