Animation of changes in total precipitable water (colours) and 500mb pressure height (contours). Total precipitable water is the amount of water in the atmosphere above a point on the surface. It is colour-coded from blue (much water) to red (very dry). 500mb pressure height is the altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is 500mb (compared to an average of 1013.25mb at the surface). Such data are used for weather forecasting. | |
