Animation of changes in 500mb pressure height (colours) and sea level pressure (contours). 500mb pressure height is the altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is 500 millibars (compared to an average of 1013.25mb at the surface). Mean sea level pressure is the pressure at the average sea level. 500mb pressure height is colour-coded from red (higher altitude) to blue (lower altitude). MSL pressure is contoured: there is typically a band of low pressure encircling the Earth at the equator, which is then mixed by other forces. 500mb pressure height relates to surface pressure as pressure generally falls predictably with height, so low 500mb pressure typically means low sea level pressure. It is also affected by temperature, however, with colder regions having lower 500mb pressure heights than warmer regions with the same sea level pressure.
