Animation showing precipitable water (the amount of water in the atmosphere) over the Antarctic region in 1902. The black dot shows the ship 'Discovery', which was frozen in the ice continuously for two years at this time, from where much scientific data has been recorded. 'Discovery' was the vessel used for the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904. Due to its cold surface temperatures, Antarctica is overlaid by a constant region of high pressure called a polar high. This means there is very little moisture in the atmosphere and very little precipitation, causing it to be designated a polar desert. | |
