Dupuytren's contracture in the hand of a 71 year old male patient. This is a condition that causes one or more fingers to bend towards the palm. The affected fingers are unable to straighten completely. It is caused by an abnormal thickening of the fascia, which is a layer of tissue under the skin that may develop into a hard lump or thick band. Dupuytren's contracture is commonly observed in men over 50 years old and tends to run in families. The ring and little fingers are most commonly affected, and in many cases, it affects both hands. The condition tends to worsen slowly over many months or years. There is no cure, but if severe the main treatment options for this condition include surgery or using a needle to straighten the fingers.
