Thrush on a woman's tongue
Thrush on the tongue of a 92 year old female patient following two courses of antibiotics. Thrush, also known as candidiasis, an infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans. When the mouth is affected by thrush it appears red inside with white patches, that may bleed when rubbed off. Other symptoms in adults are cracks at the corners of the mouth, not tasting things properly and difficulty eating and drinking. C. albicans is normally harmless, but the use of antibiotics or a suppressed immune system can lead to infection. Treatment is with antifungal drugs.
