Gross specimen of a gallbladder with cholesterolosis. Cholesterolosis is a common, non-neoplastic alteration in the inner lining of the gallbladder that is characterised by accumulation of lipid (fat) within macrophages in the mucosa. It is an asymptomatic condition and commonly found incidentally in cholecystectomy or specimens. The presence of small, linear, golden yellow flecks in a background of green or congested gallbladder mucosa creates a strawberry-like appearance. | |
