De Chancourtois' telluric screw, illustration. This was the first attempt to order the elements according to periodicity (recurring patterns). It was devised by the French geologist Alexandre Emile Beguyer de Chancourtois and arranged the elements around a cylinder according to atomic mass. With each turn of the cylinder, or screw, elements with similar properties aligned vertically. | |
