Gas hydrate crystals, illustration. Gas hydrate crystals consist of gas molecules trapped within a cage of frozen water molecules. Most natural gas hydrates contain methane or sometimes ethane, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide. Global warming could cause the destabilisation of gas hydrates, releasing methane gas into the atmosphere. As methane is a greenhouse gas this will further contribute to global warming. | |
