American physicist Professor Albert Crewe, photographed in 1984 in his laboratory at the University of Chicago. Crewe developed the field- emission technique for generating electron beams in electron microscopes. Such field-emission microscopes achieve very high resolution. Crewe used one of these instruments in 1970/71 to take the first electron microscope pictures to show individual atoms. | |
