Illustration of Auer rods (white) in an acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) cell. APL is a subtype of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). AML is a cancer affecting the myeloid tissue (bone marrow), and APL specifically affects a type of white blood cell precursor (promyelocytes) that form a type of white blood cell known as granulocytes. Auer rods are needle-like crystals found in some myeloid cancers. They are formed from the fusion enzyme-containing granules. Auer rods are associated with more aggressive forms of cancer.
