Illustration of the Scottish chemist David MacMillan (born 1968). MacMillan is best known for his work on enantioselective catalysis, that is the molecules that drive the production of one of the two possible forms of a chiral molecule (a molecule that cannot be superposed on its mirror image). He developed small organic (carbon-based) molecules that could be used for this catalysis and coined the term organocatalysis for this process. These new catalysts were inexpensive and didn't use polluting heavy metals. They have a found a wide range of applications, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. MacMillan was awarded a share of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work along with Benjamin List. | |
