Illustration demonstrating how a corner cube retroreflector works. Light sources fire photons (red, green and yellow beams) at a corner cube reflector (grey triangle). The retroreflector always directs light back to its source, regardless of the angle at which it arrived. The corner cube is made up of three reflective surfaces at 90 degrees to each other. Each surface bounces the light back in one axis. When the light bounces off all three surfaces, it travels back parallel to its original course. Retroreflectors like this are used in road signs, emergency equipment and surveying tools.
