Computed tomography (CT) scan of a 40-year-old female patient with chest pain showing oesophageal enlargement caused by achalasia. Achalasia is a failure of smooth muscle fibres to relax. Here it is causing the lower oesophageal sphincter to remain closed, resulting in food stasis. Oesophageal achalasia can cause difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation and sometimes chest pain. It often has no underlying cause. Treatment with drugs can relieve the symptoms.
