Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red blood cells, or erythrocytes and a white blood cell, or leucocyte. Red blood cells are biconcave disc-shaped cells which transport oxygen around the body. Their red colour comes from the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin. The white blood cell is roughly spherical with cell projections on its surface. White blood cells are part of the body's immune system, which protects against infections.
