Satellite images showing snow cover in the Flims, Laax and Falera ski resorts in Switzerland on 11th January 2022 (left) and 6th January 2023 (right). The lack of snow in 2023 was caused by a heat wave over the new year caused by a high-pressure zone over the Mediterranean region and an Atlantic low-pressure system that brought warm air from northwest Africa to the middle latitudes. The peaks above 2000 metres do have snow n 2023, but ski slopes below this have had to use artificial snow. Image obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite. | |
