Satellite image showing the lack of snow in the Flims, Laax and Falera ski resorts in Switzerland on 6th January 2023. The peaks above 2000 metres do have snow, but ski slopes below this have had to use artificial snow. The lack of snow was caused by a heat wave over the new year caused by a high-pressure zone over the Mediterranean region and an Atlantic low-pressure system that brought warm air from northwest Africa to the middle latitudes. Image obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite. For the same area in January 2022 see C057/7332. For a comparison of the two years see C057/7334. | |
