Uterine leiomyosarcoma, light micrograph. Leiomyosarcoma of the uterus is a malignant (cancerous) tumour (sarcoma) of smooth muscle origin. It occurs in a slightly older age group than leiomyomas (fibroids). It usually form soft, fleshy, bulky tumour masses in the uterus. Microscopically, it is composed of intersecting bundles of spindle cells with significant cytologic atypia, increased mitotic activity, and necrosis. The background stroma is collagenous. | |
