Uterine leiomyosarcoma, light micrograph. Leiomyosarcoma of the uterus is a malignant (cancerous) tumour (sarcoma) of smooth muscle origin. It occurs in a slightly older age group than leiomyomas (fibroids). It usually form soft, fleshy, bulky tumour masses in the uterus. Microscopically, the usual variant of leiomyosarcoma is composed of intersecting bundles of spindle cells with significant cytologic atypia and increased mitotic activity in a background of collagenous stroma. In the myxoid variant of leiomyosarcoma (shown here), the tumour cells are present in a background of highly myxoid stroma. | |
