Infective endocarditis, gross specimen. Infective endocarditis is inflammation of the endocardium (innermost layer of the heart). It usually involves infection of the valve surfaces resulting in the formation of granular or polypoid lesions on valve leaflets and the chordae tendinae. The lesions are composed of fibrin, platelets, inflammatory infiltrate and bacterial colonies. This image shows involvement of aortic valve. The leaflets appear damaged, ulcerated and distorted. | |
